5 Ways Animation & Explainer Videos Can Help Human Resource Leaders

Performance Conversations Whiteboard Animation | Showcasing best practices for 1:1 performance conversations.

Internal communication from HR leaders, when done right, builds shared understanding, alignment, transparency, and trust with employees. But let’s face it — there’s an explosion of information competing for your employees’ inboxes and awareness. It’s becoming more and more challenging to cut through the noise — a challenge that’s amplified in a remote working environment.

Here’s where animation can help. HR leaders we’ve worked with have found that leveraging creative storytelling can grab employee attention, make complex topics more relatable, and inject some much-needed fun.

HR leaders use our custom animated videos to:

  1. Communicate business strategy

When we speak to employees across different organizations, one of the most consistent questions they ask is, “What is our leader’s vision for the team? We want to know where we’re going.” Animation can help you communicate your strategic direction, and help employees see how their contribution impacts the big picture.

    • Client request: “We have our strategy house in place - can you help us communicate the vision, mission, and five strategic priorities for our organization?”

    • Approach and deliverable: The three-minute “Strategy House” animation was used to kick-start company-wide strategy huddles. The video set the stage for deeper conversations, and was later leveraged on the internal website.

  2. Share performance management best practices

Effective performance management requires that all managers and employees: Understand the process clearly, invest the time and energy needed to prepare, and learn how to have crucial conversations. Here’s how animation can help.

    • Client request: “We want employees to feel engaged with performance management. Can we dispel the ‘myths’ associated with the process, and empower employees to focus on their development?”

    • Approach and deliverable: We worked with an HR team to curate best practices, and created a series of short animated videos, each focusing on a different aspect of performance management. The video above, for example, focuses on how employees can prepare for their 1 x 1 conversations.

  3. Showcase cross-functional career paths available to employees

Animated videos can bust organizational silos and help employees understand the internal landscape and the career opportunities available across functions.

    • Client request: “It’s critical that all employees understand how each function works with each other, and how each group contributes to our larger vision.”

    • Approach and deliverable: Our team led a discovery process by interviewing senior leaders from 16 functions of the organization. Our final deliverable was a fun four-minute animation — packed with information about the 16 “rockstar” functions — which was showcased in the company career fair.

  4. Make (remote) new employee onboarding more engaging

You had planned a big two-day new employee onboarding event - and then COVID-19 happened!

    • Client request: “We need to make our employee onboarding process more interesting and impactful - especially while employees are distributed. Two days of talking-head videos can get overwhelming.”

    • Approach and deliverable: We translated the original content designed for in-person delivery into a series of short animations. Each video was designed to spark interest around a specific subject area, after which employees could dive deeper into the content.

  5. Bring the employee experience to life

As your HR team works to elevate employee experience, it’s important to paint a picture of what the future will look like for employees. Animation helps showcase the culture and tangible benefits your employees can expect - and can be leveraged to attract new talent.

  • Client request: “We’re working hard on several HR initiatives that will truly help unlock the full potential of our employees. We want to communicate what that will look like.”

  • Approach and deliverable: We worked with an HR leadership team to distill the expected “future of work,” and how the organization was preparing for it. The sketch-style animation highlighted HR foundations (principles, values, core beliefs) and HR initiatives, and was used to align all employees around the HR vision.

We believe that your vision is only as good as the life you bring to it. How could your team use animation to engage and align employees? Let’s talk.
