Start Mapping your Employee Experience
Journey maps are a visual tool that provides an end-to-end view of a lifecycle. For an employee map, this view includes onboarding, exiting, and everything in between. At each stage of the journey, the map captures experiences that are delightful, challenging, or due for improvement.
Keys to a Successful Employee Journey Map
Don't go it alone. Build a core cross-functional project team of eight to twelve people, including HR representatives, line managers, and employees across departments with different levels of organizational experience.
Segment your employees. Different employee types have different experiences. Make separate maps to account for their unique circumstances. For example, consider segments based on role, geographic region, or other factors.
Get employee feedback: Don't guess what your employees think, ask them. Try 1:1 interviews and focus groups to gather authentic insights directly from employees.
Use the right tools: If in person, get into a room for a two-day sprint with a large wall, sticky notes, and bottomless coffee. For remote sessions, try digital whiteboarding tools such as MURAL or MIRO that enable global collaboration.
Focus on moments that matter: Focus on touchpoints that have an outsized impact on the employee's experience. These are moments that can strengthen how your employees feel about the company or create severe disengagement.
